The water at Mosquito Bay lights up when you touch it.
Single-celled plankton flare blue when the water moves, and Vieques holds the brightest bay of the three. Fajardo’s Laguna Grande is the one you can reach and return from in an evening. Both run on the moon: book the dark nights either side of the new moon and the glow is unmistakable.

El Yunque is an hour east of San Juan, and worth the whole day.
Twenty-eight thousand acres of cloud forest, the only tropical rainforest the US Forest Service runs. The main road needs a timed reservation; the waterslide and rope-swing trips use the river valleys outside the gate instead. Both get wet. Bring shoes you can swim in.

The old city’s streets are paved in adoquines, blue-grey blocks cast from iron furnace slag and carried over as ship ballast. They ring underfoot and turn cobalt in the rain. Above them stand El Morro and San Cristobal, two sea forts the National Park Service now runs, with grass ramparts wide enough to fly a kite from.

The Monster
Inland from the coast the limestone breaks into mogotes, haystack hills riddled with river caves. Orocovis hangs one of the longest zip lines on earth across that valley, flown face-down at highway speed. The gentler version is the same landscape from a rope, a raft or a cave floor with a headlamp.

Rum and Mofongo
Cataño across the bay holds the largest premium rum distillery in the world, and the ferry there costs less than a coffee. On the plate it is mofongo: green plantain fried, mashed with garlic and crackling, filled with shrimp. San Juan also claims the piña colada, and two bars still argue about which one poured it first.
